Office of Legal Services
The Office of Legal Services (OLS) partners with its clients to provide creative and effective legal solutions to support, protect, and advance the health and well-being of all Californians.
OLS provides in-house legal analysis, advice, and representation to the Director of the California Department of Public Health. It is also responsible for the enforcement of privacy requirements for the Department, and for compliance with requirements for the adoption of regulations.
The primary responsibility of the Privacy Office is to oversee and ensure the Department's implementation of and compliance with California and federal privacy laws, including the California Information Practices Act (IPA) and the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) privacy regulations.

The Office of Legal Services of the Chief Counsel, four Assistant Chief Counsels, and approximately 75 attorney and non-attorney professionals. The legal work is divided among four teams, which are: the Administrative Litigation Team, the Center for Health Care Quality Team, the Public Health Programs Team, and the Regulations, Privacy, and Special Projects Team. OLS also houses the Privacy Office and Office of Regulations within these teams.

Step 2: Take Examination/Assessment
Before you can work for the State, you need to take and pass an examination for the job type (classification) that you wish to be considered for employment. The assessment process can take many forms (i.e. self-assessments or written exams) and maybe required to be completed in-person or online. Examination Bulletins list the minimum qualifications and the steps required to apply and/or complete the examination/assessment. If you have current or past state experience, you may have Transfer Eligibility or Reinstatement Rights.
Step 3: Search and Apply for Jobs
Once you have taken the examination or established eligibility for the job type that you wish to be considered for employment, you may be considered for open positions in that job type by applying for job vacancies. Login to your CalCareer account, locate the job posting you wish to apply for and click on “Apply for This Job” and follow the prompts.
