More than 2.8 million illnesses and 35,000 deaths are attributed to infections from antimicrobial-resistant pathogens like carbapenemase-producing organisms (CPOs) and Candida auris (C. auris) in the United States each year. Among Californians, this translates to roughly 360,000 illnesses and nearly 4,500 deaths.

Public health, healthcare facilities, and laboratories should communicate and collaborate to support establishing and enhancing detection through surveillance systems, infection prevention and control practices, and antimicrobial stewardship programs to prevent and contain antimicrobial resistance across all healthcare settings.
